About Australian Rules Football

Australian Rules Football (AFL) is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field. It is also known Aussie Rules, football, and footy. In some regions, the Australian Football League, the sport's governing body, markets the game as AFL.

The sport's origins can be traced to football matches played in Melbourne, Victoria, in 1858, going back to even earlier games in the 1820s, inspired by English public school football games. Seeking to develop a game more suited to adults and Australian conditions, the Melbourne Football Club (MFC) published the first laws of Australian Rules Football in May 1859. Today, "Aussie Rules" has the highest spectator attendance and television viewership of all sports in Australia. The AFL Grand Final, held annually at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), is the highest attended club championship event in the world.
